Observations
Here at La Scourtinerie, the shade sails are exposed to bad weather all year round for several seasons now. Over time, we observe a color modification, especially on the side exposed to the sun (above). Depending on the exposure conditions, our shade sails may turn pale or grey (same as wood exposed under similar conditions).
Strong sun and wind can lead to fiber loss which then leads to the weaving thickness gradual diminution, and therefore impact the shade sail efficiency. This becomes apparent after several years though and the shade sails wintering allows them to last longer. Note that the quality of the shade sail remains optimal in the first 2 years.
Please note that snow can significantly increase the sail’s weight and lead to, either a collapse of the supporting structure (pergola), or a rope breach regarding the suspended shade sails. In such situation, wintering is highly recommended, if not required.
As a general rule, to maximize your shade sail’s life, and whenever possible, we advise you to store it in a dry, rodent-free place.
CAUTION : We’ve noticed that rain can sometimes cause the natural tannins in the coconut fiber to bleed, so be careful with the white tiles and fabrics on your terrace. We therefore recommend that you rinse your shade sail with plenty of water when you receive it, then leave it to dry before installing it. Repeat the operation several times if necessary.

Bamboo brings an exotic feel to your patio with its natural appearance, but its weather resistance is questionable. How do I choose the right shade?
When it comes to shading your terrace with a pergola, you need to consider the following points:
- Decide on the size you need (the size of your pergola),
- Choose a material that is both wind-resistant and aesthetically pleasing, such as coconut fabric,
- Define the type of shade you want: total shade, subdued shade, UV protection, etc. ,
- Maintenance: choose a fabric that doesn’t have to be winterised and is rain-resistant,
- Budget: when setting a budget, don’t forget to include the estimated lifespan of the fabric.
What are the standard sizes for pergolas?
Our shade cloths for pergolas come in a range of sizes, which you can select when you order: 2 x 2, 2 x 3, 2 x 4, 2 x 5, 2 x 6, 3 x 3, 3 x 4, 3 x 5, 3 x 6, 3 x 7, 3.5 x 3.5, 4 x 4, 4 x 5, 4 x 6.
How high should the canvas be placed on a structure?
The height of the structure will determine the height of the canvas. However, if the structure is too high, why not fix it lower, so that the fabric is approximately 2.5 metres from the ground. Finally, don’t forget that the higher the fabric, the more shade it will cast at the beginning and end of the day.
How do you determine the ideal size?
There’s no need to provide extra shade. Choose the same size as your pergola. If your pergola is not one of the standard sizes of our shade cloths, you can take a larger one and fold it over or roll it up on one edge.
How do you waterproof your shade sail?
It’s not necessary to waterproof our shade cloth, which is made from natural coir. For a conventional cloth, a simple garment waterproofing product will do the trick. Note, of course, that waterproofing the fabric can accentuate the problem of water pockets.
How can I avoid water pockets?
For a waterproof cover, the only solution is to fix the cover on a slope or in the shape of a dome… or to drill holes in the centre of the cover.
Our pergola covers are water-resistant (rot-proof) and their mesh allows drainage. This unpleasant problem, which deforms and sometimes breaks conventional covers, does not exist with our product. Of course, you won’t be able to stay sheltered under our covers when it rains… but that’s not their aim.
How do I fit the canvas without drilling?
Our covers can be attached using simple coconut cords (included in your order) and knots around the metal or wooden structure of your pergola.
How do you install your shade on a pergola?
- Make sure the structure is stable and solid
- Attach the corners of the shade cloth to the hooks using ropes or snap hooks.
- Pull the shade cloth taut and adjust it if necessary.
- Then secure the fabric every 30 centimetres.
- Make sure the fabric is secure before using it.

Which knot should I use to secure a shade sail?
There are several types of knot suitable for fixing your shade sail to your structure:
- The chair knot,
- The caulker knot,
- Tension knot,
- figure-of-eight knots.
However, if your fabric is not exposed to strong winds, a simple standard knot will suffice.
Do not use a plastic clamp (“colson”) to attach your shade; this will prematurely wear out the rope and can quickly cause it to break. In addition, plastic has a reduced lifespan in sun and weather.
How heavy is your coir fabric?
The question of weight is often raised in relation to the strength of your pergola structure. Shade cloth weighs 1.2 kg/m² and 2.4 kg/m² when wet.
